Grandparents Essay

Cassy knew why grandparents are special

Written by Connie Small

For the 5th graders on Grandparents Day, they were all assigned an essay to write about their grandparents. The winner would receive a $2 bill and a red ribbon. I knew none of this, other than there was to be a special day at school for grandparents and it was the grandparents of the 5th graders.

On that day, I sat in the bleachers with my mother-in-law. We watched as the children put on a gymnastics show for everyone. Then, the principal announced that they were going to tell who the winner of the essay contest was. There were roughly 60-70 5th grade students. I gasped when he called out, "The winner is......Cassandra Small!"

I watched as my beautiful little girl walked up to the principal to receive her prize. He bent down as she reached him, which put the mic down to her level. She reached him and said, "It's CassOndra"! Everyone in the auditorium laughed at this feisty 10 year old little girl, correcting the school principal.

I recently found this essay Cassy wrote. I'd actually forgotten that I had it. I don't know what happened to the red ribbon, but I still have that $2 bill. When she handed it to me, she told me to keep it safe for when she got older.

I'm keeping it for you Cassy. Even though you'll never grow any older, you'll never truly die, because you are loved and remembered by so many.
